Kingston, Ontario and area
Neighbourhoods and nearby towns we cover
We're a free referral service for Kingston, Ontario and nearby towns. Tell us what's wrong with a window, door or glass and where, and we pass it to an independent local pro who quotes and does the work. Areas are grouped by the age of the houses and by who issues permits, because both shape most window jobs.

The old core: downtown, Sydenham, the University District and Williamsville
After the fire of 1840, downtown rebuilt in limestone and brick: expect wood sash, storm windows, deep stone openings and a fair chance of heritage rules.
- Downtown and Market Square: Princess Street shopfronts with flats above.
- Sydenham Ward: limestone houses in Old Sydenham, many rented.
- University District: pre-First World War houses let to students.
- Williamsville: limestone, Victorian and Craftsman houses.
Lakeside and inner suburbs: Portsmouth and Kingscourt
Portsmouth Village was its own village on the lake until the city took it in in 1952, and its older houses face the wind off the water. Kingscourt, north of the core, mixes owner-occupied homes with many rentals.
The west end: Bayridge, Collins Bay, Westbrook and Cataraqui North
Most of the west end was Kingston Township until 1998. In these later suburbs the usual job is a fogged thermal unit (the sealed glass panel inside the frame), a patio door that drags or a torn window screen. See Bayridge and Collins Bay and Westbrook and Cataraqui North, a growing area where a warranty may still cover the fault.
Kingston East and Barriefield
East of the Cataraqui River, the former Pittsburgh Township takes in CFB Kingston, rural roads and Barriefield Village, one of Ontario's oldest heritage districts, where window changes need heritage approval. Away from the village, the work looks more like the west end, often for families arriving on a posting or leaving one.
Beyond the city: Amherstview, Bath, Gananoque and Wolfe Island
Outside the City of Kingston, coverage depends on which pros take jobs in your direction. Amherstview and Odessa and Bath are in Loyalist Township, mostly owner-occupied houses. Gananoque has the oldest housing in the area. Wolfe Island is reached by the free ferry, so photos before the crossing help the right glass arrive on the first trip. Send the request and we'll check coverage before anything is booked.
Which office handles permits for your address
Every neighbourhood inside the city uses the City of Kingston's building permit office. A same-size window or door replacement generally needs no building permit; creating or altering an opening does, as does heritage work. Loyalist Township, Gananoque and the Township of Frontenac Islands each have their own building department, so check with your township before changing an opening there.
Only three heritage districts
The City has three heritage conservation districts: Barriefield Village, Market Square and Old Sydenham. Portsmouth Village and Williamsville aren't among them, but any house can be designated on its own, and a designated house needs a heritage permit before its windows change.
Sydenham Ward is not Sydenham village
Sydenham Ward is the downtown neighbourhood, with the Old Sydenham heritage district inside it. The village of Sydenham, north of the city, is in South Frontenac Township and is a different place. On this site, Sydenham means the downtown ward.
Common questions
Where does coverage stop outside the City of Kingston?
There's no fixed line. Pros take jobs in Loyalist Township, Gananoque and on Wolfe Island when the work and the distance make sense, but it isn't a given. Put your town, postal code and a photo on the quote request, and we'll check whether a pro serves your address before anything is booked. If nobody does, we'll tell you.
Is travel charged separately for jobs outside the city?
Sometimes. It depends on the pro, the distance and the job, and on the island the ferry adds time. Ask before a visit is booked, and ask for any travel cost to appear as its own line on the written quote. Good photos can save a trip, because a pro can often judge the job before driving out. The Wolfe Island page covers island jobs.
My address is outside the city. Whose permit rules apply?
Your own municipality's. Amherstview, Odessa and Bath are in Loyalist Township, Gananoque is its own town, and Wolfe Island is in the Township of Frontenac Islands; each has its own building department. The City of Kingston's same-size rule applies inside the city only, so call your township before changing the size of an opening.
My neighbourhood isn't listed. Which area page fits my address?
Go by the age of the house rather than the name on the map. Older stone and brick near downtown behaves like the old core; later subdivisions behave like the west end. Area pages exist where streets share their houses and problems, not where coverage stops, so send the request with your street and a photo. The how it works page explains what happens next.
