Broken storefront glass: what happens tonight, and what waits
When a shop window breaks on Princess Street or anywhere else in Kingston, Ontario, the job comes in two parts. The opening can usually be made safe and covered soon after. The permanent glass takes longer, because it's made to measure. We connect shop owners and commercial landlords with independent local glass professionals who handle both, and we make sure the request gets an answer. More in commercial glass.

The first hours
A broken shop window: securing the storefront
Break-in, thrown object or reversing van, the order is the same.
Make it safe
Keep people well back. Tempered glass scatters in small cubes; older plate glass leaves sharp pieces that can drop from the frame. Don't pull shards out by hand.
Photograph before anything moves
Wide shots and close-ups, inside and out. After a break-in, call the police first.
Cover the opening
Plywood or a temporary panel keeps the shop secure and the heat in. Ask whether the pro can board up the same day; it depends on who is free and the hour.
Replace it properly
Tempered glass can't be cut once it's made, so each permanent piece is measured and ordered to size.
Downtown heritage
Heritage storefronts in the Market Square district
Downtown was largely rebuilt in limestone and brick after the fire of 1840, and the Market Square Heritage Conservation District covers many of those 19th-century commercial buildings. A storefront change there may need heritage review before new glass goes in. Staff approve minor changes; larger ones go to committee and Council. If the new glass will differ from what broke, in tint, divisions or framing, call Heritage Planning first; the heritage permit page explains when a permit applies.
Williamsville's stretch of Princess Street, revitalized after the Williamsville Main Street Study, sits outside the conservation districts, though a single building there can still be designated. See downtown and Market Square and Williamsville.
Glass choices
Glass options for shop fronts: tempered, laminated or an insulated unit
The pro matches the glass to the opening and to what worries you most.
Tempered glass
Heat-treated safety glass that breaks into small, blunt pieces. When it goes, the whole pane goes.
Laminated glass
Layers bonded to a plastic interlayer. It cracks but tends to stay in the frame, so the shop stays closed up and a smash-and-grab takes longer. Heavier, and usually dearer.
An insulated unit
Two panes sealed around a spacer, like a house window's thermal unit. It suits a heated shop fighting condensation.
The entrance
Doors and hardware on busy entrances
A shop door is used all day, so its hardware usually wears out long before its glass.
Closers, pivots and locks
A door that slams or won't latch usually needs its closer adjusted, not replacing. See commercial glass door repair.
Glass in the door
A cracked door pane can usually be replaced in the existing aluminum frame, if the frame is square.
Timing
Working around opening hours
A neat board-up can let the shop open while the new glass is made, and some pros will fit it before opening or after closing, which can change the price. Measure the visible width and height, note any transom above, and send those details with your request.
What affects the quote
What shapes the price of storefront glass
Every storefront is quoted from its own sizes and glass:
- Width and height of each pane, and one piece or several
- Tempered, laminated, an insulated unit, or a combination
- Aluminum framing, older wood, or a stone opening that isn't square
- A board-up first, and any after-hours work
- Access, lifting equipment and any heritage review
A photo of the whole storefront and one of a frame corner help a pro quote before visiting.
Insurance
Documenting damage for an insurance claim
Ask your insurer early how they want the claim documented. Ask the pro to itemize glass types and sizes, with the board-up separate from the permanent glass; adjusters follow that more easily. Coverage depends on your policy.
