Screen doors · Kingston
Patio and hinged screen doors that slide, close and keep bugs out
A screen door that's off its track, torn or banging against the frame usually needs a part, not a new door: rollers, mesh, a closer or a catch. We connect homeowners and landlords in Kingston, Ontario with an independent local pro who repairs screen doors, and if the frame is past saving, they quote a new one. The full list of door services covers the rest.
- Closer or mesh before a new door
- Sliding, hinged and retractable
- Batches for rental units

Patio screens
Sliding patio screen doors: rollers, frames and mesh
Light panels are easy to knock off the track and easy to bend.
Falls off the track
Its small top or bottom rollers have worn, broken or lost spring tension. New rollers, adjusted to the track, keep it on.
Drags or sticks
Grit in the track or a bent bottom rail. Cleaning helps; a bent frame is straightened or rebuilt.
Torn or bulging mesh
Rescreened in its frame, just as a window screen is, often with pet-resistant mesh.
Won't latch
The latch or its catch on the door frame has worn or shifted. Both are small parts.
Hinged doors
Hinged screen and storm-screen doors
On a hinged screen door, hinges loosen, the frame sags at the latch corner and the closer weakens. Many older Kingston houses have a combination door that trades glass for a screen in summer, and those inserts tear and lose their clips too.
Re-seating hinges, squaring the frame and a new closer bring most back. For the winter glass, see storm doors.
Retractable screens
Retractable screens for doors that can't take a fixed screen
Garden doors that swing outward often have nowhere to hang a conventional screen door. A retractable screen rolls into a housing at the side of the frame and pulls across when wanted.
They suit a sheltered doorway best; in a strong gust, mesh can pull out of its guide.
Lake wind
Closers and catches for windy days
Gusts off the lake can catch an open screen door and fling it against the siding, bending the frame and tearing the closer bracket out of the jamb.
An adjusted closer and a wind chain limit the swing, and a firm catch stops the rattle. Small parts that often save the door.
Repair or replace
Repair or replace the screen door?
Repair when the frame is square, or can be made square. Replace when an aluminum frame is kinked or split at the corners, a wood door has rotted along the bottom, or parts can't be matched.
Older openings often need a door built to fit; the pro measures before ordering.
What affects the quote
What a screen door repair or new door depends on
The price follows the door and the part:
- Sliding, hinged or retractable
- Rollers, closer, hinges or latch, and whether matching parts are still made
- Mesh type, including pet-resistant or solar
- A new door built to fit an odd-sized opening
- How many doors, for a landlord with several units
A photo of the whole door and a close-up of the rollers or hinges tell the pro most of what they need.
Before you ask
What to send with your request
Photograph the whole screen door, then the failing part: rollers, hinges or closer. Landlords can list several units in one request; see help for property managers. If the glass door beside it also sticks, mention it, since the pro may handle sliding door repair too.
