Vinyl & hybrid
Vinyl and hybrid windows: where they fit in Kingston
Across much of Kingston, from postwar streets to the west end, most replacement windows are vinyl. It resists rot, needs no paint, and with a sound thermal unit it handles a lake-wind winter well. It isn't the answer everywhere: designated houses and the three heritage districts need approval before windows change. We're a referral service. We connect you with an independent local pro who supplies and fits vinyl or hybrid windows, and who'll say when a repair will do.

The usual choice
Why vinyl is the default in many Kingston homes
About half of Kingston's homes predate the 1980s, and a large share went up between the 1960s and 2000. Many have had one round of replacements already, usually vinyl, made to measure for framed walls with brick or siding outside. Deep stone openings in the old core can take vinyl too, but the finishing inside and out takes more care.
Hybrid frames
Hybrid frames: vinyl inside, a different finish outside
A hybrid pairs a vinyl frame with another finish, usually aluminium cladding outside or wood inside. The point is a look vinyl alone can't give: darker exterior colours, a slimmer profile, or wood in the room. Hybrids cost more than plain vinyl. The glass and the seal decide how warm the window is; the finish mostly decides how it looks.
Labels
Reading ENERGY STAR and performance labels
ENERGY STAR in Canada uses one national standard for windows, with no climate zones, so a label naming a zone is out of date. Look up any model on NRCan's product list.
U-factor
How much heat passes through. Lower is better.
Energy Rating (ER)
A combined score for heat loss, solar gain and air leakage. Higher is better.
Rebates
Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program covers full ENERGY STAR window replacements, generally with a home energy assessment; a glass-only swap earns nothing. The City's Better Homes Kingston program is paused. Verify both before counting on them.
Heritage check
Heritage districts and designated homes: check before you choose
On a designated house, or in Barriefield, Market Square or Old Sydenham, changing windows needs a heritage permit first; minor district changes are approved by staff. The City's heritage window policy is available on request. We haven't seen its text, so we can't tell you whether vinyl is acceptable on your house, and no one should promise it is until Heritage Planning says so. Our heritage home windows guide explains how to check your status.
Is the house designated?
Check the City's heritage register. Listed alone is different from designated.
Is it in a district?
Only three: Barriefield, Market Square and Old Sydenham. Portsmouth and Williamsville aren't districts.
Have you called Heritage Planning?
Before signing. A quote is easy to change; a made window isn't.
What affects the quote
Cost factors for vinyl replacements
Every vinyl window is made to order. The quote reflects:
- Number, size and style: casement, slider, awning or fixed
- Plain vinyl or a hybrid exterior, and the colour
- Double or triple pane, and glass coatings
- Retrofit into the old frame, or full removal
- Trim, and stone or brick openings that need extra finishing

Repair first
Repairing vinyl windows (hardware, seals, thermal units)
A vinyl window that fogs, drafts or won't lock rarely needs replacing whole. The fogged thermal unit can be swapped on its own (foggy window repair), and cranks, locks, rollers, balances and weatherstripping are all parts. Replace when the frame has cracked or warped, or several units are failing together; sliders have their own list on the sliding and double-hung page. For full replacements, see replacement windows.
